Hockey Champions Trophy

The Champions Trophy is - after the Olympics and the World Championships - the most prestigious hockey tournament for national teams. It was first held in 1978 by the Pakistan Hockey Federation. Since 1980, the tournament will take place at alternate locations each year. Host is the International Hockey Federation (FIH ).

1987, a Champions Trophy was created for women to life. First, this tournament was held at two yearly intervals. From 1999 to 2012, was also held annually.

From 2012, the Champions Trophy to be held only every two years, in even-numbered years in which the Olympic Games or the World Championships are held.

Regulations

Since 2011, the tournament is played with eight participants into two groups. Eligible are the hosts, the five best of the previous Trophy and the winner of the Champions Challenge. The remaining places will be allocated by the FIH via wildcards.

By 2010, the six best hockey teams in the league system determined against each tournament winner. Were eligible to the host association, the defending champion, the reigning Olympic champion, the reigning World Champion and the top ranked in the most recent Olympic Games or World Championships associations. Champions Trophy Men

Only five countries were awarded the Champions Trophy at the 34 previously discharged tournaments. Record winner is Australia with thirteen victories against Germany with nine and the Netherlands with eight wins. Pakistan won three times. Spain was able to secure the trophy first time in 2004.

Champions Trophy Women

In the 20 previously discharged tournaments, there were six different winners. Record winners are Australia and the Netherlands, with six wins, Argentina won five times. South Korea, the People's Republic of China and Germany, once in each winner of the tournament.
