Hōdai Yamazaki

Hodai Yamazaki (Japanese山崎 方 代, born 1 November 1914 in Kofu, † August 19 1985 in Kamakura ) was a Japanese writer.

Life

Yamazaki began writing poetry after his primary school days. He joined the Tanka Group Chijo (地上) and published tankas in newspapers and magazines, where he earned his living through various jobs. In 1939 he moved to his sister to Yokohama and published a first collection of poems under the title bansho Kuriawase (万障 繰り 合わせ) in a mimeographierten edition of 100 copies.

In 1941 he was drafted into the army, where he in combat lost his right eye and the left eye was also badly damaged. After the war, he joined several Tankagesellschaften and became one of the most important representatives of tanka poetry. In 1955 he published his first volume of poetry Hodai (方 代). This was the observance of the poet Yoshino Hideo, whose pupil was Yamazaki. In 1971 he edited the literary magazine Kansho (寒暑) with Okabe, Keiichiro and others.

In addition to the above Yamazaki published books of poetry Ubaguchi (右 左 口), Kōrogi (こおろぎ) and Kasho (迦叶) and a collection of essays under the title Aojiso no Hana (青じそ の 花).
