Hoëdic

Hœdic ( Breton: Edig ) is a commune with 120 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Morbihan in the Brittany region; it belongs administratively to the Arrondissement Lorient and Quiberon with the canton.

Geography

The municipality is located on the Île d' Hœdic, a small granite island in the Gulf of Biscay, in southern Brittany. Other communities do not exist on the island. The municipal area also includes the small offshore island group in the South East Les Grands Cardinaux with the lighthouse Phare des Grands Cardinaux. The two most important ports on the island are the Port Argol the north and Port de la Croix to the south.

Transport links

Hœdic is connected by ferry to the neighboring island of Ile d' Houat and the mainland at Quiberon. In the summer season there are some additional links.

History

The community was founded in 1891, before it was incorporated in Le Palais on the neighboring island of Belle- Ile. In 1931 she had 417 residents, mainly feeding on the shrimp fishery. The French archaeologist Saint -Just Pequart describes the inhabitants as lazy and unmotivated, on the island was not a single craftsman to find. The women employed not even with needle work and also their kitchen is very rudimentary. The island show old farm tracks, but it would only grown potatoes and no grain, the mill and the community oven are now falling apart. In winter, the island was often cut off from the outside world for weeks.

Excavations

1931 and 1934 was from Saint -Just Péquart a burial ground dating from the late Mesolithic dug, which was located in a shell middens. It is located on a small spur on the northwest tip of the island. The middens contained also built of stone slabs hearths. There were 14 graves with all kinds of grave goods found.
