Höfn

Höfn [ hœpn̥ ] (also Höfn í Hornafirði; German port in the Horn Fjord ) is the capital of the municipality Hornafjörður in eastern Iceland. On 1 January 2009, the city had 1635 inhabitants.

Geography

The town lies at the foot of Vatnajökull Höfn, 17.5 km south east of the glacier tongue of Fláajökulls and 30 km from the edge of the actual Vatnajökull, on a promontory between the Hornafjörður and the Skarðsfjörður.

History

The history of the city is directly connected Ottó Tulinius, the Höfn 1897 declared a trading center.

Culture and sights

The Once inhabited by Ottó Tulinius House ( Gamlabúð ) now houses the local museum ( in the Hafnarbraut ). Furthermore Höfn still has a Maritime Museum ( the Pakkhúsið ).

The main attraction of Höfn is the glacier museum, where several hours a day films and animations can be seen on the Vatnajökull; next to it you can find there information boards and glaciers diaries.

Economy

The main branches of acquisition of the place include fishing, fish processing, and trade and agriculture. Even the tourist service sector continues to grow in importance.

Transport and Infrastructure

Höfn owns next to the more westerly Þorlákshöfn the only port in the largely agricultural and flat for shipping to Iceland's south coast.

Höfn is served by the barely five -kilometer Hafnarvegur ( Highway 99 ) to the Icelandic road network. The town is near the ring road ( Hringvegur ), the main connecting road of the country.

The distance to Reykjavík is 459 miles from a more northerly Egilsstaðir there are 247 km.

The nearest airport, Hornafjarðarflugvöllur (English Hornafjörður Airport, IATA: HFN, ICAO: BIHN ) is approximately 7 km north of the city.
