Hogmanay

Hogmanay is one of the major Scottish festivals and is celebrated on the evening of December 31st in the early morning hours of January 1.

Traditionally Black Bun (a kind of fruit bread ) is served. Another tradition is the First Footing, in which one enters with a glass of whiskey, a lump of coal, a black bun, shortbread and salt over the threshold of neighbors and friends.

A Hogmanay tradition is that the participants walk around a fire in a clockwise direction and with a stick or tongs on a goatskin beat (see deisel ).
