Geography

Geographical Location

Hohenahr located in Gladenbacher mountains at an altitude 260-435 meters above sea level. Together with the hamlets Ahrdt and Mudersbach the municipality borders on the Aartalsee.

Neighboring communities

Hohenahr borders in the north on the community Bischoffen (Lahn -Dill -Kreis), in the east on the community Biebertal ( Gießen district ) in the south to the city of Wetzlar, in the southwest of the city Aßlar and in the west on the community of Mittenaar (all in the Lahn- dill-Kreis ).

Structure

The municipality consists of the six districts Hohensolms, old churches, Erda ( Seat of the municipality ), United Altenstädten, Ahrdt and Mudersbach.

History

The district Erda was first mentioned in the year 771, but it is to suggest that the district of old churches with his much older church some years older than Erda and was just not mentioned earlier because of its size. In the 14th century the Counts of Solms built the castle Hohen Solms.

The community Hohenahr was taken on April 1, 1972 in the course of municipal reform in Hesse by voluntary association of municipalities Erda, Hohensolms and Ahrdt. On July 1, 1972 United Altenstädten was also incorporated on a voluntary basis by Hohenahr. On January 1, 1977, the old churches and communities Mudersbach were incorporated by state law.

Economy

Energy

On the grounds of the former NATO tank farm Erda a solar park was built in 2011, which became operational in December of this year. The solar park covers an area of 16.2 ha and consists of 17,040 modules with a total rated output of 3.91 MW. Furthermore originated 2012-2013 near the Altenberg bei Hohensolms a wind park consisting of seven 198.5 meter high wind turbines of the type Nordex N117/2400. This should produce per year, approximately 44 million kWh of electricity, equivalent to the consumption of 12,500 households.
