Hohenwarte

Hohenwarte is a municipality in the district Saalfeld- Rudolstadt, in Thuringia ( Germany ). Fulfilling community for Hohenwarte is the community Kaulsdorf.

Geography

The municipality is located in the nature reserve Thuringian Slate Mountains - Upper Saale on Hohenwarte reservoir.

History

1361 Hohenwarte was first mentioned. For centuries, the operation of mills coined the small town on the Saale. The Rudolstädter company Grosch & Zitkow built a cardboard factory in Hohenwarte 1904. Due to the influx of many workers, the population increased rapidly. The construction of the dam Hohenwarte finally changed the townscape fundamentally.
