Technical college ( HTBL [A]) ... in the Federation Higher Technical Training and Research Institute ( HTL [ u] VA) ... with attached research institute

The Higher Technical Institute ( HTL, HTLA ) Technical college ( HTBL, HTBLA ) and Higher Technical Training and Research Institute ( HTBLVA, HTBLuVA ) in Austria are vocational higher schools, with emphasis on technical, arts and crafts subjects.

Training areas ( disciplines ) are construction wood, chemical, electrical - electronics, machinery, textile, and other. In total there are 75 technical colleges in Austria (school year 2011/ 12).

Education system and concerns

Forms of training

At Higher Technical Colleges typically three types of training are offered:

  • The normal form of the higher departments will also usually visited by the eighth grade. The five-year training concludes with the diploma and matriculation examination. After three years of engineering- professional practice can be given at the request of the professional designation Engineering ( Ing ). The conclusion of an Austrian HTL is recognized throughout Europe as defined by EU Directive 92/51 EEC, Annex D as a graduate training (equivalent to a university education of at least 1 year and less than three years). The Graduate entitled to study at all universities and corresponds to ISCED level 4A.

In addition to these technical and commercial high school are at the technical colleges (hence: " educational establishment " for the purposes of a school center ) also connected commercial, technical and craft medium schools:

  • The schools are mostly four-year courses of vocational middle school, which (usually ) after completion of the eighth grade - high school, recently new middle school or lower level AHS - be visited. After writing a technician working this education is completed with a final examination. The audit allows regulated profession permissions and trade licenses after two years of professional practice, and is similar to the technical school in other countries. The education corresponds to ISCED level 3B. In addition, a Berufsreifeprüfung be stored. The Berufsreifeprüfung to study at colleges and universities.

Particularly interesting are the schools for arts and crafts and design, these are historical ( commercial and / or art schools ) organized at the technical colleges in mostly own departments.

  • Post Secondary Special forms of HTL are maintained for people with an apprenticeship diploma, master's examination or maturation in form on the day, or part-time evening classes. These include colleges and schools for master ( master classes ). The period of training is staggered according to educational background. College last eight semesters for persons with relevant apprenticeship, six semesters for persons with specialist degree, master's examination, four semesters of high school graduates. Take master classes, depending on the desired professional qualifications (such as Master, polishing or any other professional certificate) 1-4 semesters. All of these forms are usually school or evening school or in the price systems in blocks as in-service training offered. The education corresponds to ISCED level 5B.

Training areas

Typical subject areas are: industrial engineering, construction engineering, wood technology, electronics, electrical, communication engineering, information technology, computer science, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, agricultural engineering, mining, chemical engineering, industrial engineering, textile technology and plastics technology.

In addition, the entire general education material for Matura is offered, mostly ups applied forms (focus on multiple -language English, Applied Mathematics ).

Relation to universities

Unlike in Switzerland, the HTL was not converted into the university. The very successful for the Austrian economy and unique in Europe training model HTL should be maintained. With legal establishment of the polytechnics was transiently created the opportunity for HTL graduates to 2006, the term " Dipl. -HTL -Ing. " to achieve: to a six-year relevant work experience, the drafting of a written work and the completion of an oral examination before a Committee of Experts was required. With this scheme HTL graduates should be given the opportunity to obtain redress in area-wide availability of FHs a higher quality financial statements, taking into account their education.

For HTL graduates with engineering diploma in-service training offered at colleges. There are (usually two semesters at Austrian universities of applied sciences ) counted up to four semester as training. Also at Austrian universities occasionally relevant HTL education is recognized, but generally to a much lesser extent.

Relation to the economic life

The technical colleges are guided very wirtschaftsnah, the schools are also in Austria as serious. The teaching of technical subjects employed in these institutions are usually also in the midst of professional practice and teach in the secondary profession. The practical school work and required summer internships are usually carried out in close co-operation or in behalf of the local economy, and the working life of appropriate client contact, presentation and implementation of a practical work is the primary objective of education and grading basis. HTL graduates - the higher as the central departments - have excellent career prospects, and, if they do not opt for a higher education, most choose before graduation between different jobs, so go after directly into the economy.

Research institutes of higher technical institutes ( HTLVA )

An HTL with attached research institute is run as a HT ( B ) L ( u) VA. These facilities operate alongside teaching and research and development, standardization and evaluation.

This close linkage of research and development, vocational training, and scientific services under one roof fosters a school education which corresponds to the current state of the economy. Most of these institutions are based on tradition or Imperial times, and have emerged from the early polytechnic schools, where teaching Research Institute ( engineering school ) wanted to offer specialist training in education. Here goes, in recent years the trend even further to the merger of state or national economic research institutions and schools into centers of excellence.

List of technical colleges

The largest HTL Austria is located in Mödling. With 3,500 students, it is also the largest school in Europe. The oldest vocational school in Austria is the Vienna HTBLuVA 5 Spengergasse. It was founded in 1758 by Maria Theresa. The schools are usually the city or county school board, have four of the listed establishments here for historical reasons and because of their unique status of a technical and intellectual establishment ( tGLA ) and report directly to the Ministry.

In recent decades, some technical colleges were created within Vienna, some were moved or shared. As the name concept HTL Wien [ I, III, IV, etc.], was also the name had to be adjusted. Furthermore, it was passed to give any meaningful names either the schools or, as ever continue the district has remained in the name bury this place in Roman Arabic numerals or write out the district as district name. (Hence the former name is in the table at the Vienna HTLs indicated in parentheses. )
