Hokksund

Hokksund a city in the Norwegian municipality is Øvre Eiker in Fylke Buskerud and the administrative center of the municipality.

Location

North-east from the river Drammenselva is Hokksund Gamle (Old Hokksund, be equated with the Old Town), located southwest of the railway station and the new town. It created many new housing estates on the outskirts, for example Frognes and Semsmoen.

History

By 1920 Hokksund was still called Haugsund, this often led, in particular at the post office to confusion with the city of Haugesund in Rogaland. So the city henceforth the Ministry decided to rename Hokksund. This notation was chosen because it was the pronunciation of the name in the next. Alternative proposals were Håkksund or HOKKSUND. There were strong protests from the local council and the local population, who instead prefer the name Eiker had accepted.

Hokksund has developed on both sides of the river Drammenselva. Travelers coming from Drammen and Oslo have to pass to get into direction Hallingdal and Numedal Hokksund. Those who want to Kongsberg have to cross the river. They were previously on set of ferrymen. There was in the past a boat connection to Drammen. 1623 was one silver in Kongsberg and so the king decided a road between Kongsberg and Hokksund to be constructed, which should then continue to Drammen and Oslo. The route Kongsberg Hokksund was thus the first road in Norway. In 1866 came with the construction of Randsfjordbanen, a railway connection added. The stop Hokksund is now a major hub of Bergensbanen ( route Oslo - Bergen) and the Sørlandsbanen (Route: Oslo - Kristiansand - Stavanger ). The railroad was the population work and was very important for regional economic development. Many companies took advantage of the connection to the transmission network and laid rails on their factory premises. Traditionally Hokksund is dominated by the timber industry. The Drammenselva was once used for rafts of harvested timber, which was shipped from Drammen further. Frequently damming the smaller tributaries of the river so that the water flow when you open the floodgates was strong enough to flood the wood to continue.

Since the 2000s, new industrial enterprises settled, especially in cement and electronics sector, at. On 1 January 2002 the council Hokksund awarded city rights. It later grew together, among others, with the city of Drammen and is now part of the Tätorts Drammen.

Attractions

The Nøstetangen Glassworks (1741-1777) is Norway's first glassworks. She is known for her artistic design. The chandelier of Kongsberg Kirke is a work from the factory. The Nøstetangen museum exhibits some of the works and shows the traditional methods of production.

The Haug Kirke is equipped with a splendid organ with 22 votes and 1136 pipes, built by the German organ builder Jürgen Ahrend 2004.

Bright Fossen is a famous place for salmon fishing. Since the 12th century there were complaints that agriculture has impeded the salmon runs through one old grain mill on Hellefoss.
