Hokuriku-Shinkansen

The Hokuriku Shinkansen (Japanese北 陆 新 干线) is under construction or in planning Japanese high speed line between Takasaki and Osaka. The line between Tokyo and Joetsu (planning name) from JR Higashi- Nihon (English JR East ) and Joetsu to Osaka by JR Nishi- Nihon (English JR West) are operated.

History

The construction of the Hokuriku Shinkansen in 1973 in the Nationwide Shinkansen Railway Development Act ( English Translation of Zenkoku shinkansen tetsudō seibi - hō ) decided. In this Act, the construction of five other Shinkansen routes, it was decided that the Hokkaidō Shinkansen, the extension of the Tohoku Shinkansen and both expansion stages of the Kyushu Shinkansen. After the privatization of the Japanese National Railways in 1987, the then government decided that the construction of the Hokuriku Shinkansen between Takasaki and Kanazawa should have priority. After 1991, the choice of venue for the Olympic Winter Games had fallen in 1998 to Nagano, this first stage of the Hokuriku Shinkansen was again divided into two sections: The first section between Takasaki and Nagano was built for the Olympic Games 1997 deadline and has since than Nagano Shinkansen operated. For the Nagano Shinkansen E2 series has been developed, which has since been in use. At the Olympic Games some courses of Asama compound were operated with the for this purpose specially modified set F80 200 Series.

In spring 1998, the Japanese government decided to extend the line from Nagano by Naoetsu.

The second phase between Nagano and Kanazawa is currently under construction and should be operational by the spring of 2014 at the latest in operation. Individual sections have already been built in the course of construction of the Nagano Shinkansen, however, an important milestone was the completion of the 22.2 km long Iiyama tunnel in 2007.

With the first run of a Shinkansen train between the stations according to Nagano Kurobe Unazukionsen began on 2 December 2013 the test program for the new run. First, the test of trains of the East i series are performed. This first, around 135 km long section is scheduled to open in the year 2014, during the approximately 92 km long section between Kurobe Unazukionsen and Kanazawa is to be taken until the spring of 2015. The tests are to begin in the summer of 2014 for the second section.

Further plans

The Hokuriku Shinkansen is to connect in their final stage, Tokyo, Toyama with Osaka. The section between Kanazawa and Tsuruga to be completed by spring 2025. The approval for the construction of this section has been issued by the Japanese government in July 2012.

For the section between Tsuruga and Osaka, however, there are still no established track alignment. There are currently three variants are analyzed:

Compounds

On October 10, 2013, JR East and JR West announced that the following connections on the Hokuriku Shinkansen to be offered:

  • Kagayaki (かがやき, dt "shine" ): Express connection between Tokyo and Kanazawa
  • Hakutaka (はくたか, dt " Midnight Caller" ): connection between Tokyo and Kanazawa, which stops at all stations.
  • Tsurugi (つるぎ, dt " sword " ): shuttle connection between Toyama and Kanazawa.
  • Asama (あさま, dt " volcano Asama " ): Already existing connection of the Nagano Shinkansen between Tokyo and Nagano.

Rolling stock

Currently, the E2 series are operated on the Nagano Shinkansen vehicles. At the opening of the section to Kanazawa they are to be replaced by new vehicles E7/W7 series.
