Action
Johnny Case and Julia Seton who met while vacationing in Lake Placid and head over heels in love. He is surprised when he finds that the attractive Julia is the daughter of a multimillionaire. Her father Edward Seton has considerable doubt Johnny to accept as a son, as his daughter tells him that she wants to marry this soon. Finally, the young man comes from quite a humble background and wealth, he is not exactly happy. But as Mr. Seton learns that Johnny has just made a profit transferring financial statements and is professionally and entitled to, he looks forward to the marriage intentions with more affection.
Julia's sister Linda is excited about Johnny as a brother in law from the outset. Linda segregates in their views and inclinations of her family. She holds especially making money not for the essential in life. When she notices that Johnny thinks similarly, she feels attracted to him. On engagement evening everything out of hand for Julia and her father when Johnny tells them that he wants to provisionally withdraw from working life and view the world with the money he had earned a business transaction. During a sumptuous feast Johnny is confronted against his will with the equally arrogant as cynical world of New York's moneyed aristocracy. He defies society and celebrates with Linda and his best friends, the professor couple Nick and Susan Potter, a rollicking small party in the " family room" by Linda. When Julia and her father try to put an end to the anarchic goings, Johnny realizes that Julia for the money and social standing count more than zest for life, romance and self-realization. Johnny must decide and decide against Julia, but the pain of that will not last long on. Although he loses Julia, but wins Linda.
Background
The film is based on the Broadway Comedy Holiday by Philip Barry in which Katharine Hepburn played the understudy for Hope Williams and an idea as Linda Seton. Already in 1930 the comedy Holiday by Edward H. Griffith with Ann Harding and Mary Astor was filmed in the lead roles. In both films Edward Everett Horton plays the Nick Potter.
