Holland is a city in the west of the U.S. state of Michigan, United States. It lies on the Black River a few miles from Lake Michigan. The majority of the city is located in Ottawa County, although its limits have spread to the Allegan County. The city currently has a population of 33 051 (as of Census 2010) and, with the Tulip Airport via a small local airport.

Culture

Every year the Tulip Festival is celebrated in the spring time. The festivities take place at more than one week. The festival is traditionally began in the second week of May and takes place every year since 1930.

History

The emigration to this region was essentially initiated by a pamphlet of the Dutch preacher Albertus van Raalte Christian. In this document dated 25 May 1846, he calls for the separation of church and state and called for emigration. Together with the first emigrants founded van Raalte 1847 in the State of Michigan, the Dutch colony of Black Lake, from which emerged the city of Holland. Many Dutch and people from the county of Bentheim followed van Raalte to Michigan. The first Grafschafter settled about 5 km south of Holland and founded new towns and Graafschap Bentheim.

Holland celebrated in 1997 the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the first settlers. At the Dutch ancestors still remembered the inscription "God zy met ons " in the city seal and the coat of arms with the windmill " DeZwaan ".

Economy

The furniture manufacturer Haworth, Inc. is based in Holland. The American automotive supplier Johnson Controls also has a branch in Holland
