Hollandse IJssel

The Hollandse IJssel ( German "Dutch Issel ") is a 46 km long river in the Dutch provinces of Utrecht and South Holland. It flows from Nieuwegein about Gouda after Krimpen aan den IJssel, a suburb of Rotterdam. There she joins the Nieuwe Maas. The Hollandse IJssel is below Gouda only with vessels up to 2000 tonnes passable.

Tributaries

Tributaries of the Hollandse IJssel are the Kromme River IJssel, the Lange Linschoten, the Vlist and Gouwe. The most famous places are Nieuwegein, Capelle aan den IJssel and Krimpen aan den IJssel. At the point of origin and in the mouth region are urban landscapes, in between the "green heartland ".

History

The Hollandse IJssel was originally a side arm of the Lek, which began near Nieuwegein. For two reasons the arm in the 13th century had to be separated: by the damming of the Rhine at Wijk bij Duurstede the Lek was larger, and the reclamation of the Dutch peat area needed a good drainage. However, this was only work if the level of the IJssel was lower. Count Floris V had 1285 Dam bij het Klaphek build. Since then, the Hollandse IJssel is fed only from channels.

From the Merwede canal to Nieuwe Maas

Nieuwegein -Gouda

In the middle of the Hollandse IJssel Nieuwegein branches off from the Merwede Canal, shortly after the Kromme IJssel branches off, the river continues to flow after IJsselstein. From there, the Hollandse IJssel flows in a northwesterly direction to Montfoort. About Willeskop it reaches Oudewater. There ends the Lange Linschoten, in Haastrecht opens the Vlist, a stream, the Lopikerwaard and Krimpenerwaard separates. For both areas the Hollandse IJssel takes over the drainage.

Gouda IJsselmündung

Shortly before Gouda is the Barrage De Waaiersluis, from then on is the Hollandse IJssel channeled. About the Mallegatschleuse can be driven in the city north to Gouwe. West of Gouda is the Julianaschleuse, which is connected via a short channel to the Gouwe; this is the most used means of communication to the north.

The tidal influence extends to Gouda and varies seasonally from 1.80 to 3.30 meters. Below Gouda, the river widens and crosses Gouderak - Moordrecht, Nieuwerkerk and the smaller Ouderkerk. Then the Hollandse IJssel flows through the cities Krimpen aan den IJssel at the left, and Capelle aan den IJssel on the right bank. Between the two cities since 1958 the storm surge barrier Dutch IJssel, the oldest member of the Delta Plan. In kralingseveer the river into the Nieuwe Maas flows. Opposite is the former island IJsselmonde.
