Hollis Frampton

Hollis Frampton ( born March 11, 1936 in Wooster, Ohio, USA, † March 30, 1984 in New York City ) was an American avant-garde experimental filmmaker, video artist, writer, theorist and photographer.

Life and work

Hollis Frampton visited in 1951 the boarding school Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, where he met Frank Stella and Carl Andre. He goes to the 1954-56 Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, where he occupied a number subjects, but going without a degree. 1956 Frampton began a correspondence with Ezra Pound, he moved to Washington, DC and visited him in the fall of 1957 almost every day in the hospital. Pound finished then work on the Rock Drill - Cantos and began the throne section. He also read his visitors before the whole poem with explanations. Frampton translated at the suggestion Pounds Leo Frobenius book experiences continents ( 1925-29 ). In March 1958 Frampton went to New York and moved with his friends Andre and Stella, later only with Andre, in an apartment on Mulberry Street. He started photography, documented the work of Stella ( The Secret World of Frank Stella, 1958-62 ) and Andre (1959 - ). He also portrayed James Rosenquist and Larry Poons ( for Vogue, August 1965). He lived in 1965 with the artist Lee Lozano together. In 1966, he married Marcia Steinbrecher, they divorced in 1974.

In 1962 he began making films. Frampton worked as a structural filmmaker. His most significant work is arguably Wrath Lemma (1970), a film that caused a drastic change in the perception of experimental film at the time. In addition to Stan Brakhage Hollis Frampton was one of the pioneers of abstract expression in American film. Hollis Frampton was with nostalgia and Critical mass of participants in Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 in the Department of Film Acting: New American Cinema.
