Hollow-Face illusion

With deep repentance ( engl. Hollow -Face illusion ) is called an optical illusion that makes us perceive three-dimensional protruding faces, where in reality prevails an inwardly curved structure. So a concave face mask appears with proper lighting as a convex structure (see picture right). The reverse effect ( a convex structure appears concave) can be observed as well. Another effect of the depth reversal occurs in actually planning figures, in which the observer interpret into both a convex and a concave structure and can be " jump around " with a little practice the interpretation.

Explanation

The image of the face mask which is imaged on the retina, can be ambiguous (either as a foreground or background) to be interpreted. The human brain automatically selects the more probable interpretation. Since we are used to in everyday life, to meet faces, even the mask background is interpreted as a face. This example shows that our perception is often based on experience.

Example

The video demonstrates the effect of the low- reverse on a folded paper dragon.
