Holmes Conrad

Holmes Conrad ( born January 31, 1840 in Winchester, Virginia; † September 4, 1915 ) was an American lawyer, politician, and United States Solicitor General.

Biography

The son of the future Attorney General of Virginia, Robert Young Conrad graduated, after visiting the Winchester Academy training at the Virginia Military Institute and served during the Civil War as a Major in the 1st Virginia Cavalry Regiment of the Confederate States Army. After the war he continued his studies at the University of Virginia and received in 1866 admitted to the bar in the state of Virginia. After several years as a lawyer, he was elected as a representative of the Democratic Party in 1878 in the House of Representatives from Virginia, and belonged to this until 1882.

In 1893 he joined the staff in the Ministry of Justice of the United States and was initially to 1895 Assistant to the U.S. Attorney General. In February 1895, Conrad was appointed by U.S. President Grover Cleveland to the Solicitor General and took this third-highest position within the U.S. Department of Justice until July 1897 true.

Subsequently, he was appointed Lecturer of English Law at Georgetown University.
