Holt Gas-Electric Tank

The Holt Gas -Electric Tank was a tank that was built by Holt Manufacturing Company in collaboration with General Electric. He was the first tank to be built in the United States. During the year 1917 the first prototype was developed, which was built in the spring of 1918.

Chassis and engine

The chain landing gear was extended and modified version of the chassis, which was used by the Holt tractors. The chains are driven by two electric motors, the energy generated by a generator. Similar to the St. Chamond and the Holt Gas -Electric Tank was operated by separate electric motors and controlled by electrical resistances. Thus, although the steering was more comfortable than with mechanical steering systems, but the engines could overheat easily. The performance of the engines was 67 kW ( 90 PS) at a top speed of almost 10 km / h The maximum range was 50 km.
