Holy Rosary Cathedral (Vancouver)

The Holy Rosary Cathedral (German Cathedral of the Holy Rosary ) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the Canadian city of Vancouver and the seat of the Archdiocese of Vancouver. It is located in the city center at the Richards Street.

Building

The first Catholic church building was opened in 1889 and was built entirely of wood. It was ten years later replaced by a stone building. After a construction period of 490 days was consecrated on 8 December 1900. In 1916, the church was elevated to a cathedral.

The Cathedral in the Gothic Revival style was built of sandstone from the island of Gabriola Iceland and has the shape of a cross on. It is 49 m long, 32 m wide and 19 m high. The height of the steeple is 66 m. The architects were TE Julian and HJ Williams.

Equipment

The organ was built iim 1900 by organ builder Karn - Warren, and restored by Casavant Frères 1999. The instrument has 49 registers on three manuals and pedal ( 2,899 pipes ), including 4 transmitted and three extendierte register. The play and Registertrakturen are electro- pneumatically.
