Holyrood, Edinburgh

Holyrood is a district in the Scottish capital Edinburgh. He joins right at the end of the Royal Mile in the east to the city center on.

The Canons of Holyrood Abbey ( Abbey of the holy cross, "holy rood " ) was built in 1128 by King David I, however, far outside the former city of Edinburgh. Between Edinburgh and Holyrood Abbey was at that time the city Canongate. (By " canon " refers to a canon in their name. )

Holyrood is known as the site of Holyrood Palace, the residence of the Queen in Scotland.

Here a modern parliament building was constructed for the Scottish Parliament, and in the meantime the Parliament in the press is also simply referred to as Holyrood, analogous to Westminster for Parliament in London. The Parliament is from Calton Hill with the government buildings ( St Andrew's House on Regent Road) and the large Holyrood Park.
