Hombori

Region

Hombori is a city in Mali, Mopti and Gao which lies between the edge of the Hombori Tondo Table Mountain. This area is inhabited by the tribe of the Gourmantché and belongs to the administrative region of Mopti.

The municipality has 23.009 inhabitants ( census 2009)

Hombori is known for its Anonymous architecture with houses of hewn boulders with narrow passages and tunnels between. With an average temperature of 30 ° C, this place is one of the hottest on earth.

In the neighborhood there are spectacular rock formations that challenge climbers daring arts. Hombori Tondo, Mali 's highest mountain at 1,153 meters, is also in the immediate neighborhood.

History

Hombori is an ancient village of the Dogon, a West African ethnic group. After the invasion of the Almoravids in the 16th century, part of the Royal Family of Gao Coming settled in Hombori. The people of the Songhai, which represents a minority today the royal refugees followed, later in this area.
