Home Guard (Denmark)

The Hjemmeværnet ( Danish Home Guard ) is a strike force in the Danish Armed Forces, which consists predominantly of voluntary reservists.

History

The Hjemmeværnet was created in 1949 primarily from members of the Danish resistance movement under the influence of occupation of Denmark in World War II. The Lottekorpset ( unarmed woman Army Corps ) in 1989 combined with the up to then only by men maintained Hjemmeværnet.

Mission and structure

The Hjemmeværnet serve to strengthen and support of the Army, Navy and the Air Force in the performance of their military duties. Your tasks are provided in the main:

  • Monitor and report
  • Guarding, security and protection services
  • Limited combat duties

The Hjemmeværnet includes the following units

  • Army Home Guard ( Hærhjemmeværnet )
  • Naval Home Guard ( Marinehjemmeværnet )
  • Flyer Home Guard ( Flyverhjemmeværnet )
  • Operation Home Guard ( Virksomhedshjemmeværnet )

It is directly subordinate to the Ministry of Defence and is available only in crises and defense case directly to the military command.

2004, they comprised 58 640 members, of whom 9,152 women. Fixed employee about 800 people.

Among the well-known Danish personalities who went through the basic training of Hjemmeværnet society, includes HRH Crown Princess Mary of Denmark.
