History

Development

The history began in February 1978 with the Grand Prix Model NR 500 At this time won in the 500cc class of Grand Prix Racing the two-stroke engines over four-stroke engines in terms of performance more and more advantage. Because of this, because a two-stroke engine fires once per revolution of the crankshaft and a four-stroke engine fires every other revolution of the crankshaft, a two-stroke engine has a theoretically twice as high a capacity as a Vietakter. The Honda engineers tried to compensate for this disadvantage by the oval piston engine. The piston with a super elliptical shape allowed eight valves and two spark plugs per cylinder, resulting in a better utilization of the combustion chamber and a much higher gas throughput. Despite a power output of 115 hp at 17.500/min it was inferior to the competition with the two-stroke engines.

A new attempt was made by Honda in 1987 with the more developed NR 750 in the endurance race at Le Mans. With nearly 160 hp at 15.500/min it was superior to their competition (approx. 130 hp ), reaching the second place. In the race, she was disqualified due to a defect, but could demonstrate the superiority of the concept. Shortly thereafter, oval piston engines were banned by the FIM.

The resultant of the 750 racing version roadworthy Honda NR 750 was in production launch 125 hp at 14.000/min and a weight of 230 kg. Despite their works abbreviation RC 40 is is more of a sports tourer than a racer.
