Honne and tatemae

Honne and Tatemae are Japanese words that describe recognized phenomena of Japanese society.

Importance

Honne (本 音Japanese ) refers to the true feelings and desires of a person. These may be opposite to what is expected by society or what is traditionally required in accordance with the position of a person and the circumstances. These desires are often kept hidden, except to close friends.

Problems in everyday life

The distinction between Honne and Tatemae is a universal phenomenon in human society, and the solution of the associated contradictions is part of maturity as he grows up.

Contemporary phenomena in Japan as hikikomori and parasite singles are viewed as examples of the growing problems of Japanese culture with a new generation that is unable to cope with the increasing complexity of Honne and Tatemae in an increasingly capitalist dominated society.
