Hoodoo (folk magic)

Hoodoo [read Hudu ] is a religious doctrine with magical rituals that developed in rural southern states of the United States under the African-American population. Hoodoo combines elements of African and Native American magic together, but also took others, such as European influences.

Hoodoo followers believe they can influence many situations of daily life with the aid of supernatural powers. The Hoodoo practices include, for example, prophecies, curses, treat disease and amulets or talismans that protect against evil or bring good luck.

Often Hoodoo and Voodoo are considered synonyms, and both terms may have a common etymology. Although both practices have elements in common, they are different. Hoodoo is probably influenced by Voodoo, but in contrast, no established religion with fixed structures. Hoodoo is a magical tradition without a specific religious background. While Voodoo Catholic influences has ( such as Catholic saints with African deities are identified), Hoodoo is more influenced by Protestantism. The Bible is true in Hoodoo as a large spellbook, particularly Moses, is considered a powerful summoner. The creation of the world by God's word is the first and highest Hoodoo spell work. A common bible -related practice is about to use a psalm as a defense against magic enemies by a Bible open on the relevant page and placed in a certain direction.

A known Hoodoo practice is wearing a Mojo, a cloth bag that is worn hidden under clothing and is filled with magical ingredients. A Mojo protects against evil or brings luck, about the game or in love.

Like the Mojo, including Hoodoo itself is often cited in the blues. Examples are the songs of Junior Wells Hoodoo Man, Hoodoo Man by Birth Control Hoodoo Woman by Memphis Minnie Hoodoo Woman Krokus Hoodoo or by the British band Muse.

Hoodoo plays a crucial role in the movie " The Skeleton Key " ( The Skeleton Key ) from 2005 with Kate Hudson in the lead role.

In addition, it plays an, albeit minor, role in the series "Supernatural" with Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki.
