Hoogezand

Hoogezand is a town in the Dutch province of Groningen.

Hoogezand belongs since 1949 to the municipality of Hoogezand- Sappemeer. The name derives from a field name, Hooge Sandt. Since 1618 introduces a channel through the district, the Winschoterdiep, the Winschoten with Groningen connects. On the high area, a settlement was established, with the year of the canal construction, in 1618, is also considered the official founding year of Hoogezand. First, a purely rural settlement, industrialization catchment was the construction of the potato flour factory of WA Scholten, which led to a strong increase in population. Also the Shipbuilding along the canal offered resettled work.

The combined municipality has 34,438 inhabitants Hoogezand- Sappemeer (2005), of which about 21,600 live in the district Hoogezand.
