Hooglandse Kerk

The Hooglandse Kerk is a Gothic Calvinist church in the Dutch city of Leiden.

History

1314 allowed the bishop of Utrecht the construction of a wooden, the St. Pancras consecrated chapel on the ' Hoogeland '. This chapel was soon replaced by a simple stone church, which was soon by the strong growth suffering but again too small. 1336 Church of the Collegiate Church was charged. 1377, work began to build a new large church. 1391 the priest choir, the choir gallery was completed in 1415. The construction of the Holy Cross Chapel in 1436 an approach of the southern transept was built. Between 1432 and 1456, the aisles were extended. Due to lack of money the pin chapter, the work came to a halt at times. In 1500, the transept was completed in its present dimensions.

1470 freed the Pope 's chapter of the diocesan authority of the Bishop of Utrecht. However, the rise of Reformation influences in Leiden meant the end for these plans. 1535 the church building was discontinued in 1559 established a new bishopric in Haarlem. 1566 were the Pankratiuskirche - and particularly its magnificent facilities - the iconoclasm severely damaged. 1572 the church passed into Protestant hands.

Until the mid-19th century the church fell increasingly. Between 1840 and 1903 it was restored by a cross. On this occasion, were also some of the 15th/16th centuries. Performed century no longer executed construction phases, the church has now received vaulted stone ceiling. A new renovation took place from 1952 to 1972. Today the Church of the Protestant Church and the ecumenical student community is used as a place of worship and also serves as a venue for conferences, concerts and other events.

Equipment

The organ was built in 1637 by the organ builder Van Hagerbeer, reusing pipe material of the previous instrument from 1565 The instrument has 24 stops on two manuals and pedal. ( Mood: Werckmeister II).
