Hoonah means village on the cliffs and is the largest Tlingit village in Alaska. It is located in Hoonah - Angoon Census Area, 40 miles west of Juneau on Chichagof Iceland at the Icy Strait. It had 2000 860 inhabitants living on commercial fishing and timber industry for a long time in the year. In the summer cruise ships dock here.

History

Hoonah was the main village of the Huna, a Tlingit tribe. 1880 established the North West Company here their first store. 1881 a Presbyterian missionary and a school was built. 1887 wintered about 450 to 500 people here. 1901 a post office was established. 1912 created the Hoonah Packing Co., a large cannery north of town. 1944, a fire destroyed a large part of the city and many priceless Tlingit cultural objects.

Traffic

Because of the exclusive island location there are only two major transport: The ferry and airplane. The daily ferry service M / V LeConte AMHS connects Hoonah to Juneau. From the air, the Hoonah Airport from Wings of Alaska and LAB Flying Service daily several flights.
