Horace James Seymour

Sir Horace James Seymour GCMG CVO ( born February 26, 1885 † 10 September 1978) was a British diplomat.

Life

Horace James Seymour was a son of Rachel Blanche Lascelles and Hugh Francis Seymour. He studied at Eton College and at Trinity College, Cambridge.

Seymour appeared in 1908 in the Foreign Service. In 1919 he was Secretary of second class in Washington DC In 1923 he was Secretary of First Class in the Netherlands and in 1925 Secretary first class in Rome.

From April 9, 1929 to October 17, 1932, he was employed in the Far East Division of the FCO. From 1932 to 1936 he was Staff Director of the British Foreign Secretary. From 1936 to 1939 he was envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary in Tehran. From 1939 to 1942 he was Assistant Under- Secretary of State at the Foreign Office. From 1942 to 1946 he was ambassador to China for Chiang Kai- shek. In 1947, he was forced to retire.

From April to July 1947 he was a member of the Franco- Siamese Boundary Commission in Washington DC. In December 1947 he was Chairman of the British delegation to the United Nations Commission Balkans in Thessaloniki.

1917 Seymour married Violet Erskine; they had three daughters, Jane ( who died in childhood on August 15, 1918), Joan and Virginia, and a son, Hugh Francis Seymour ( born December 14, 1926). They lived in Bratton House, Bratton, Westbury, Wiltshire.
