Horka, Saxony

Horka ( Upper Sorbian HORKA ) is a municipality in the district Görlitz, Saxony. The municipality, consisting of the three parts of the municipality Biehain, Horka and Mückenhain, belongs to the administrative organization Schoeps White / Neisse.

Geography

The municipality Horka located in the eastern part of the district in a wooded area near the border with Poland, about 18 km north- west of the county town of Görlitz and 4 km east of Niesky. The area belongs with its vast forests to the Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape.

History

The place name comes ( altsorbisch gorka to German "hill" ), which stands for " hill village" from Upper Sorbian word HORKA.

Horka 1305 was first mentioned in a book Görlitz city. From 1377 to 1396 the region of the duchy of Lausitz and from 1635 until 1815 for the Electorate of Saxony belonged. As a result of the Vienna Congress, the municipality Horka came to Prussia and the province of Silesia was assigned. After the Second World War saxon, the town belonged to the circle Niesky, since 1952 with the dissolution of the countries in the district of Dresden. Horka was 1936-1947 under the name of Germanization Wehrkirch.

On 1 March 1994, the municipalities Biehain and Mückenhain were incorporated to Horka.

Evangelical fortified church

The fortified church dates from the early 13th century, Romanesque- Gothic. It is surrounded by a defensive wall, built in the 12th or 13th century. The foundation of the oldest part of the wall, a 1000 year old skeleton was discovered in a Christian -style grave at excavations. The fortified church has a crypt with several stone coffins. In them are still bone to find.

During the 18th century were made, both inside and exterior modifications in the Baroque style.

Traffic

The Federal Highway 4 runs south of the community. They can be reached through the approximately 5 km away Kodersdorf connection.

The Horka Pbf station links the routes Węgliniec -Roßlau (Elbe ) and Berlin- Görlitz together. Horka lies in the track triangle of these routes, it trains the relation: Görlitz - Niesky - Hoyerswerda ( without stopping in Horka, 2010-2014 only as SEV), Cottbus and Görlitz as a high traffic highway freight route Hoyerswerda Horka - Węgliniec. The branching in Horka branch line of the former narrow-gauge railway Horka -Rothenburg - Priebus is no longer operated.

East of the passenger railway station exists at the Horka Gbf station nor a freight station, which acts as a border station for the Republic of Poland.
