Horomos

The Monastery of Horomos ( Հոռոմոս Armenian, Turkish Horomos Manastırı ) is a ruinous Armenian monastery complex in the 10th century, about 15 km northeast of Ani in the central district of the Turkish province of Kars, near the Armenian border. It was one of the most important religious and cultural centers within the Kingdom of Ani and was built during the reign of King Abas I. ( 943-953 ) by the architect Hovhannes.

From 1965 the monastery of Horomos was gradually destroyed as part of the Turkish government's policy of cultural genocide. The obtained until 1920 grave of King Ashot III. ( 953-977 ) is untraceable. Some buildings are completely gone. The dome of the Church of St. Johann collapsed in the 1970s.
