Horse Guards Parade

Horse Guards Parade is a large parade ground in London near Whitehall.

History

The course is open to the west, there is adjacent to St. James's Park. The other three sides are bounded by buildings. The Old Admiralty Building and the Citadel of the Admiralty is located on the north side, on the east side Horseguards, the former headquarters of the British Army, now headquarters of the Household Division. To the south, bordering the treasury office (HM Treasury) and the rear part of 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, at.

Originally, the area to the Palace of Whitehall was associated. Since the 17th century the place is, however, used mainly for parades, army look and other ceremonies. Every year on the official birthday of the monarch in mid-June takes place on Horse Guards Parade Trooping the Colour; also for other events with military honors, such as Beating Retreat, it is used.

The place in the second half of the 20th century has long been used as a car park for employees of the surrounding ministries. During the intensification of security measures such use was stopped after the IRA had attacked from a car parked nearby vehicle with a mortar the official residence of the Prime Minister.

On the covered with pebbles square is home to several monuments, among other things, for the British Field Marshals Kitchener and Roberts.

1999 Mike Oldfield was on the Horse Guards Parade, the premiere concert for his album called Tubular Bells III.

During the 2012 Summer Olympics were held the beach volleyball competitions at the Horse Guards Parade. For a temporary stadium for 15,000 spectators was built.
