Horsens [ hɔʀsəns ] is a Danish seaport on the east coast of Jutland with 55 253 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) and thus to Aarhus and Randers third largest city in East Jutland. The city is the administrative center of the homonymous municipality which belongs to Region Midtjylland. The town developed around the harbor, Horsens Havn, which lies at the end of the 20 km long Horsens Fjord. Horsens is a location with metal and tobacco industry and frequently a venue of world-renowned musicians. In the East, leads the Danish motorway Østjyske motorvej that goes along with the European Route 45, past the town.

In a new structural reform joined on 1 January 2007 the municipalities Brædstrup Gedved with the original municipality of Horsens ( 1970-2006; 188.84 km ²) together. The total area of ​​the municipality is 542 km ² now.

History

From the golden age in the 18th century fashionable houses in the streets Åboulevarden, Sundvejen and Søndergade testify in the center of the city. Beginning of the 19th century took place Horsens rapid change to an industrial city, in 1831 the first iron foundry was established in Jutland. A significant share of the growth of the city took the expansion of the port, which was expanded towards the end of the century and is connected to the railway network.
