Horst Antes

Horst Antes ( born October 28, 1936 in Heppenheim ) is a German painter, printmaker and sculptor.

Life and work

Horst Antes studied from 1957 to 1959 under HAP Grieshaber at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe painting. By Grieshaber he belonged to a group of painters with stand-alone profiles, such as Hans Baschang, Walter Stohrer and Heinz Schanz. At the Karlsruhe Academy, he is since 1967 professor of painting and forwards a painting class. In 1962 he lived in Florence (Villa Romana ), in 1963 in Rome (Villa Massimo ), where the cephalopod was first issued in three dimensions. In 1966 he designed metal sculptures for a garden of seven monuments of Earthly Delights, the antes in 1967 exhibited at the Federal Garden Show for the Botanical Gardens in Karlsruhe. In 1968 he was appointed Visiting Professor at the College of Fine Arts ( now University of the Arts ) in Berlin. Since 1983 he is member of the Free Academy of the Arts in Hamburg.

Starting from the informal post-war painting sought Horst Antes as one of the first pioneers of figurative painting for new ways of figurative painting, he said, a mission statement found in Willem de Kooning, the associated informal and figurative elements. He is co-founder of the new figurative painting in Germany. Characteristic are its incurred from 1962 cephalopods in which suggestions by the Kachina dolls of Pueblo Indians played a role that has long been his only motive. A cephalopod, called a " fictional character " does not have a neck, a little chest and abdomen and head and feet seem to blend into one another.

Horst Antes took part in documenta III (1964 ), the documenta 4 (1968), and Documenta VI in 1977 in Kassel. He lives and works in Karlsruhe, Berlin and Castellina in Chianti ( SI) in Italy.
