Horst Feistel

Horst Feistel ( born January 30, 1915 in Berlin, † 14 November 1990) was known as the namesake of the so-called Feistelchiffre.

Career

Feistel emigrated in 1934 to the U.S. and spent most of the Second World War under house arrest. On 31 January 1944 he was awarded an American citizen.

The following day he began the development of friend - foe identification systems at the Air Force Cambridge Research Center ( AFCRC ). After that, he worked at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, MITRE for the company, and finally from the late 1960s for IBM. Feistel completed his physics studies at MIT with a bachelor or Harvard with a masters.

He worked with others at the so-called project " Lucifer", whose goal was to develop an efficient encryption technology. The Feistelchiffre was later the basis for DES.

Private

Feistel was married to Leona Gage since 1945. The couple had a daughter, Peggy.
