Horst Stein

Horst Walter Stone ( born 2 May 1928 in Elberfeld, † 27 July, 2008 Vandœuvres, Switzerland ) was a German concert and opera conductor.

Life

Horst Walter Stein (today a part of Wuppertal ) was born on 2 May 1928 in Elberfeld, the son of a mechanic. He attended high school in arts in Frankfurt (piano, oboe, percussion, vocals), and then studied at the Hochschule für Musik Köln. His teacher majoring in conducting was Günter Wand. He studied composition with Philipp Jarnach. His musical career began in 1947 as a coach at the Municipal Theater Wuppertal, where he remained until 1951. About Hamburg he came in 1955 to the following severe war damage newly opened Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. The internationally renowned conductor Erich Kleiber had hired the then 27 -year-olds. He began as a state Kapellmeister, but was appointed music director coordinated soon. In this role, Horst Stein worked until 1961. Besides his work on the opera he taught from 1959 to 1961 at the East Berlin Academy of Music. From 1961 to 1963 he held under the director Rolf Liebermann at the Hamburg State Opera, the position of deputy director of music. Subsequently he went from 1963 to 1970 as general music director and opera director at the National Theatre Mannheim. In parallel, he was from 1969 to 1972 principal conductor of the Vienna State Opera, where he conducted more than 500 performances, most recently on April 1, 1972, the new production of Daphne with Mimi Coertse. From 1972 to 1977 he was back in Hamburg, this time as a musical director. In the 1970s, he also often a guest at the Deutsche Oper Berlin va in Wagner performances. Early on, he showed great interest in the Richard Wagner Festival in Bayreuth. Since 1952, he assisted in Keilberth, Hans Knappertsbusch, Clemens Krauss and Herbert von Karajan. From 1969 on, he conducted himself then, including the Ring of the Nibelungen, Parsifal, Meistersinger, Tannhäuser and Tristan und Isolde. Alone 1969-1986 he conducted 138 performances on the Green Hill. The Salzburg Festival as a highlight in the international music scene attracted Horst Stein. In the years 1985-89, he conducted a series of concerts and opera performances, including works by Strauss, Mozart and Beethoven.

From 1980 to 1985 he was Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva. This was followed by Horst Stein chief conductor of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. He held honorary conductor in 1996 until the appointment of this position. In addition to his Bamberger position he held until 1994, the functions of the Artistic Director of the Basel Symphony Orchestra and Music Society, in Basel.

Horst Stein lived most recently in Vandœuvres in the Swiss canton of Geneva, where he died on 27 July 2008.

Importance

Horst Stein was considered extraordinarily experienced conductor who mastered a large repertoire, had outstanding technical skills and did a lot for young artists. He devoted himself equally to the operatic and concert literature. He had a penchant for the romantic and late romantic. Composers such as Carl Maria von Weber, Brahms, Wagner, Bruckner, Strauss and Reger who have always been his favorite. He was guest conductor of major orchestras, the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Dresden Staatskapelle, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo, which made ​​him an honorary conductor.

The Vienna Symphony Orchestra, where he performed regularly awarded him the 1996 Bruckner ring. Many honorary memberships underline the importance of Horst Stein. He also served as honorary member of the National Theatre Mannheim, the Friends of the Vienna State Opera and the Richard Wagner Association Linz. For his services Horst Stein has won several awards.
