Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam

The Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. The garden was founded on 12 November 1638 Hortus Medicus Amstelodamensis located on the plantation Middenlaan 2a, on the edge of downtown Amsterdam, near the Artis zoo in the Plantagebuurt. The garden is approximately 1.2 hectares in size and contains more than 4,000 plants.

History

The Amsterdam mayor Joan van Huydecoper Maarsseveen II founded it together with the chemist and botanist January Commelin. Huydecoper, then president of the Dutch East India Company; he allowed himself to be sent from the overseas territories Mauritius, Batavia, Ceylon, Bengal, Coromandel Peninsula and Suriname plants and seeds to let settle this at the botanical garden. The first director was Frederik Ruysch.

The Hortus Botanicus, which was conducted 1885-1918 by Hugo de Vries is connected to Botanic Gardens Conservation International, the Dutch Association of Botanical Gardens ( Nederlandse Vereniging van Tuinen Botanical ) and the Foundation for National Plant Collection ( Stichting Nationale Plantencollectie ).
