Hoshea

Hosea (Hebrew הושע ) was from 731-722 BC, king of Israel. The most important source for his reign is 2 Kings 17 EU.

It is not completely secured, as Hoshea came to power. According to the Bible, he has risen against his predecessor, Pekah and overthrown and killed him. In contrast, the Assyrian king Tiglath- Pileser III boasts. , Pekah and Hoshea sold to designate as his successor. Is no doubt that Hoshea reigned in strong dependence of the Assyrians. So he had Shalmaneser V to pay the Tiglath- pileser's successor, high tribute. Hosea sought to escape this desperate situation by an alliance with Egypt. He refused the tribute, and sent messengers to instead "So, king of Egypt " for help. The identification of "So" is problematic; some historians see it as a name for the Egyptian city of Sais, others speculated to mean king Osorkon IV meant. Anyway, this cry for help brought no results. Instead, let Shalmaneser imprison Oshea and besieging its capital Samaria and conquer after three years. Then the now kingless land rose again so that Sargon II, who had become an Assyrian king, sent troops to Israel and the country subjugated final. Numerous inhabitants ( Assyrian sources say 27,290 ) were deported and settled on the Euphrates, while in return, the inhabitants of Babylon, Kutha, Awwa, Hamath and Sepharvaim were settled. From mixing with the remaining Israelites the Samaritans to have incurred.

The fate of the captured, Oshea is confusion. He probably died soon afterwards in the Assyrian captivity.
