Hossein Behzad

Hossein Behzad (* 1894 in Tehran, † October 13, 1968 ) was an Iranian painter and master of Persian miniature painting.

Life

Hossein Behzad was born in 1894 in Tehran, the son of Mīrzā Fazl - Allah Esfahani. Since his early childhood he was interested in painting. Hossein began to paint his first pictures with eight. He settled for miniaturists train at Āqā ʿ Alī Mollā Qalamdānsāz and later with Ḥasan Āqā Peykarnegār and opened his own art studio in the bazaar of Tehran age of twenty.

In Europe, Hossein Behzad best known for his 1915 incurred as a commission illustrations to Nezami Lamsa. 1918 Hossein Behzad took his first trip to Europe. 1935 traveled Hossein Behzad thirteen months after Paris, to study the present in the collections of Persian manuscripts miniatures. After his return in 1936 he began the illustrations for Omar Chajjams Ruba ʿ īyāt in a process developed by his own inimitable style. The illustrations that were previously seen only at shows, were first published in 1970 by Brigadier General Hossein - Ali Nouri Esfandiary in a book published by him about Omar Khayyam. Esfandiary describes Behzad miniatures as "Poems in Pictures" in 1946 he entered the service of the Bastan Museum ( Edāra -ye Bastan - šenāsī ) and taught at the School of Art ( Honarestān -e Honarhā -ye Ziba -ye Pesaran o Doḵtarān ) in Tehran. During this period many miniatures, including as illustrations for the works of Firdausi and Hafiz.

In the fifties, Hossein Behzad gained world fame through exhibitions in London. Boston, Paris, Prague, Washington, New York and Brussels. Other exhibitions were held in India and Japan.

At the age of 65 years, he was awarded an honorary pension by the Iranian parliament.

In addition to an award for outstanding artistic achievement by the Ministry of Tehran in 1949, Hossein Behzad received numerous national and international awards. Shortly before his death Hossein Behzad the Medal of Honor School of Fine Arts and the title was awarded Ostad (Master) for his life's work. He is regarded as one of the few masters of Persian miniature painting, his own style developed alongside the traditional style of painting, in which he integrated and Western painting techniques.
