Hot spot (veterinary medicine)

The Pyotraumatische dermatitis ( "hot spot" ) is a form of Oberflächenpyodermie, which is characterized by a localized inflammation of the superficial layers of the epidermis. It is primarily in domestic dogs, especially in animals with long, thick fur often, and occurs mainly in the summer months.

Triggers are usually harmless small skin lesions or itching causative factors such as flea bites, Cheyletiellose, foreign body, matted fur, allergies ( flea allergy, food allergy), by autotraumatization ( itching, scratching ) quickly lead to bacterial colonization and suppuration of the skin. A moist and warm skin surface promotes the growth of bacteria, most of which belong to the normal skin flora, such as Staphylococcus intermedius. Clinically, Pyotraumatische dermatitis manifests in a circumscribed, moist and hairless body whose surface has yellowish. It is accompanied by severe itching, which may give rise to a further trauma to the skin and thus also to a spillover to the deeper skin layers occasion.

The therapy is usually done locally ( topically ) using antibacterial shampoos or creams.
