Houghton County, Michigan

Houghton County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Houghton.

Geography

The northeastern part of the county forms the southwestern part of the Keweenaw Peninsula Peninsula. The rest of the peninsula is located in Keweenaw County.

The County is located in the northwest of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, bounded on the north-west and north-east to Lake Superior, one of the five Great Lakes, and has an area of ​​3889 square kilometers, of which 1269 square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Keweenaw County, Baraga County, Iron County and Ontonagon County.

History

Houghton County was formed in 1845 from parts of Marquette County and the Ontonagon County. It was named after Douglass Houghton, an American geologist and mayor of Detroit from 1842 to 1843.
