Houghton is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the largest city in the so-called Copper Country (Copper Country ) of the Keweenaw Peninsula. It is located in Houghton County and is home to the county seat.

The city is situated on the southern shore of Portage Lake, an offshoot of Lake Superior (English: Lake Superior), opposite the twin cities Hancock. It is named after Douglass Houghton, who has long been regarded as the " discoverer " of the copper deposits in the area of Euro -centric point of view. The copper deposits were, however, already thousands of years earlier broken down and used by the indigenous inhabitants of the Keweenaw Peninsula. The great copper boom of European immigrants lasted from about 1890 to 1920 in 1960, the last copper mine closed.

The descendants of European immigrants now account for nearly 90 % of the city 's population, of which the majority German and Finnish descent. More than a third live below the poverty line.

Houghton is home to the Michigan Technological University ( MTU) in the 1880s in the Houghton Fire Hall recorded as Michigan Mining School lecture their operation.
