House of Beaufort

The Beauforts were an English noble family in medieval times. They were the illegitimate offspring of John of Gaunt, son of Edward III. and his mistress Catherine Swynford. After the wedding, the parents were legitimized the Beauforts but excluded from the succession.

1397 was the eldest of Beaufort, John of his cousin Richard II the title of Earl of Somerset. His brother Henry was Bishop of Winchester in the following year.

After the takeover of power by her half-brother Henry IV of Lancaster in 1399, the Beauforts were an important family at the English court. Bishop Henry has long been chancellor of his brother, and later his nephew John Henry V 's second son John was appointed in 1443 to the Duke of Somerset. His daughter, Margaret Beaufort married Edmund Tudor 1455, the half-brother of Henry VI. Her son Henry Tudor ascended as the heritage of Lancaster in 1485 as Henry VII to the English throne, thus ending the Wars of the Roses against the House of York.
