House of Reginar

The Reginare were a family of central European high nobility, who played a prominent role since the beginning of the 10th century, especially in today's Belgium.

The rise of the family began with a kidnapping: Giselbert, Count of Maasgau, 846 brought a daughter of Emperor Lothair I in his power and married her. The marriage was recognized 849, the descendants of Charlemagne as ancestor and were therefore - in spite of the previous crime - the uppermost layer of the European nobility.

The family produced three dukes of Lower Lorraine, the Count of Hainaut and lions, the Landgrave of Brabant later Dukes of Brabant ( who are also Dukes of Lower Lorraine were ), as well as from the year 1247 to the House of Hesse, the Landgrave of Hesse, later Elector by Hesse and Grand Dukes of Hesse. The rule of Reginare ended with the dismissal of the last Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig in November 1918.
