House of Sanguszko

Sanguszko is the name of a Polish high noble family of Lithuanian origin. The female form of the name is Sanguszko (wa).

The Sanguszkos descended from the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The father of the Sanguszko Dynasty, the son of Prince Fyodor († 1399 ), who was an older half- brother of Grand Duke and King Jogaila himself, Prince Sanguszko - Fyodorovich ( † after 1454), from whose name the name of the dynasty is derived. The Sanguszkos were the king and large princely family of the Jagiellonian in the near kinship relationship, both of whose founding father was Grand Duke Gediminas. In the female line they are related to the house of Rurik.

As a regular field of Sanguszkos Volhynia was in today's Ukraine, where they had significant assets that have been extended to lands and towns in Podolia and in Lesser Poland in the course of time. At the turn from the Middle Ages to modern times, the house Sanguszko divided into two lines:

  • The Koszyrski line ( house Sanguszko - Koszyrski ), established by Prince Michał ( † around 1491 ), died at Prince Adam Aleksander Sanguszko († 1653) from the male line.
  • The Kowelski line ( house Sanguszko - Kowelski ), established by Prince Aleksander († 1511 ), named after Kovel, exists to this day.

Sanguszko is the surname of the following persons:

  • Roman Sanguszko (1537-1571), Lithuanian prince, commander ( Feldhetman the Lithuanian crown) and civil servants ( voivode, Starosta );
  • Paweł Karol Sanguszko (1680-1750), " Grand Marshal of Lithuania " (in Polish Marszalek wielki Litewski )
  • Barbara Ursula Sanguszkowa (1718-1791), poet, translator ( and third wife of Paweł Sanguszko )
  • Austrian nobility ( nobility )
