House of Spinola
Spinola was the name of one of the four most distinguished families of Genoa. The others are the Doria, Grimaldi and Fieschi. They possessed the mid-18th century, the duchies St. Pierro, St. Angelo, Sesto, St. Severino and Los Balbazes.
The first known Spinola was Guido Spinola, who fought as a knight during the Crusades and multi- Consul of Genoa was ( 1102-1121 ). His sons Ansaldo and Oberto are the progenitors of the two main branches Luccoli and St.Luca.
A Spinola bought in 1340 the city of Lucca for 30,000 guilders. Antonio Spinola was appointed first governor Genoese in Corsica in 1453.
Filippo Spinola, marquis del Sesto e di Venafro ( Benafro ), ( 1559-1585 ), had three sons from his marriage to the Princess of Salerno Policena:
- Fernando Spinola, General Field Marshal, fall 1603 in Holland
- Federico Spinola († May 26, 1603 ), royal - Spanish Admiral, like when trying to break through the Dutch blockade of Sluis.
- Ambrosio Spinola (1569-1630), Spanish general field marshal, who was known by the happy siege of Breda, Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece, 1 ° marqués de Los Balbazes, governor of Milan, Secret State and War Council.
