House of Vasa

The Vasa dynasty was a Swedish royal house from 1521 to 1654 and a Polish royal house from 1587 to 1668 The symbol of the dynasty was a corn sheaf. (Swedish: vase ). Of these, the name of the ruling dynasty is derived.

History

The Swedish family with Gustav Eriksson Vasa introduced, later Gustav I Vasa, after the separation from Denmark the first king of Sweden to the Kalmar Union. This kingdom became hereditary under Gustav Eriksson.

Johann III. married Princess Catherine Jagiellonica of Poland and joined the Polish-Lithuanian royal house of the Jagiellonian with the Swedish. From him, the Polish branch of the House Wasa came from, which in turn can be found in the list of Polish rulers.
