Background

  • " The House of Wax " at Warner Bros. was the first large-scale production in 3D a so-called " major company ".
  • Director André de Toth had only one eye, so could not see space itself. Nevertheless, he managed to create with this film is not only a horror movie classics, but at the same time also one of the few 3D movie classics.
  • The Hollywood premiere was an important social event, which also called for a number of stars on the scene that actually had nothing to do with the movie itself. An old newsreel recording shows for example the actor Bela Lugosi ( decked out in complete Draculakostüm ) and the Western Star and later U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
  • The film was one of the first equipped with stereo sound (which has not hitherto ignored in television broadcasts ) and later copied from the original 35mm film format on 70 mm film. As the first 3D movie with stereo sound, the film is in the Guinness Book of Records.
  • Originally, this film was listed in the polarization process, but later copied for cost reasons in the simpler anaglyph red - green method.
  • In the United States the film on 10 April 1953 had premiere. For the German -language version of the name of the main character Henry Jarrod was changed to Henry Bondi. The German premiere was on May 22, 1953.
  • 2005 was a loose remake called " House of Wax " with Paris Hilton and Elisha Cuthbert, which ( as a scaffold for wax figures corpses ) is based only on the original thematic material.

Reviews

" [ ... ] An eerily beautiful horror classic and a classic 3-D film. ( Rating: 3 stars = very good) "

" Disgusting, applied on mere thrill fairground attraction. "

" A surprisingly well-executed scary story that their predecessors by far surpasses in atmosphere and tension. The otherwise for scary movies rather unfavorable use of color is handled cleverly and thoughtfully here under de Toth's safer Director. In addition to a number of design effects ( worth mentioning the melting of the wax figures during the fire, and a chase through the deserted streets of New York ), the film shocked the audience by then- some a little too crass guessed scenes of violence. "

" In Victorian England, playing horror film of the smarter and more sophisticated way of experimenting with stereo sound and 3D technology. "
