Houston is a city in Matanuska- Susitna Borough in Alaska in the United States. The city is located north of Wasilla at the Little Susitna River and is accessible via the George Parks Highway.

History

On the Herning Trail (now Willow Creek Sled Trail ) was promoted to the Willow Creek Mining District cargo. A " Houston siding" was mentioned in 1917 for the first time in a card design of the Alaska Railroad. The siding was named after the congressman Houston of Tennessee. Several coal mines developed in the area in the years 1917-1918. 1966 Houston was appointed to the city. 1996 destroyed a forest fire 151 km ² of forest in the area. 433 buildings were destroyed.

Economy

Many residents work in the nearby towns of Wasilla and Palmer and Anchorage. Houston is a popular fishing and recreation destination on the Little Susitna River.

Demography

At the time of the census in 2000 ( U.S. Census 2000) Houston had 1,202 inhabitants on a land area of 58 km ². The average age was 34.1 years ( national U.S. average: 35.3 years ). The per capita income ( per capita income English ) was 17,213 ( the national average of the United States: U.S. $ 21,587 ) in U.S. dollars. 17.1 % of residents were with their income below the poverty line ( national U.S. average: 12.4 %). 13.3% of the inhabitants are of German descent and 13.0 % are of Irish descent.
