Houston County (Alabama)

The Houston County is a county located in the state of Alabama in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Dothan.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme southeast of Alabama, on the south by Florida's northern border, to the east by Georgia and has an area of 1506 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Geneva County, Dale County and Henry County.

History

Houston County was formed on February 9, 1903 from parts of Dale County, Geneva County and the Henry County. It was named after George Smith Houston, a governor of Alabama.

According to the census of 2000, there were 88 787 people in Houston County. Of these, 1,148 people lived in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 35,834 households and 25,119 families.
