Houston County (Georgia)

The Houston County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Perry, which was named after Oliver Hazard Perry.

Geography

The County is located slightly east of the geographic center of Georgia and has an area of 984 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers of water are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Twiggs County, Bleckley County, Pulaski County, Dooly County, Macon County, Peach County and Bibb County.

History

Houston County was formed on 15 May 1821 as 51 County of Georgia from the land of the Creek Indians. It was named after John Houstoun, a Governor of Georgia in the period from 1778 until 1784.
