Houston County (Georgia)
The Houston County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Perry, which was named after Oliver Hazard Perry.
Geography
The County is located slightly east of the geographic center of Georgia and has an area of 984 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers of water are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Twiggs County, Bleckley County, Pulaski County, Dooly County, Macon County, Peach County and Bibb County.
History
Houston County was formed on 15 May 1821 as 51 County of Georgia from the land of the Creek Indians. It was named after John Houstoun, a Governor of Georgia in the period from 1778 until 1784.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Houston County 110 765 people in 40 911 households and 30 233 families. The population density was 114 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 70.57 percent White, 24.76 percent Black or African American, 0.34 percent Native American, 1.59 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.03 percent from other races groups; 1.65 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.04 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 40 911 households out of which 38.4 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.0 percent were married couples living together, 14.0 percent were single mothers and 26.1 percent were non-families. 22.1 percent of all households and 6.2 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.10 persons.
28.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.5 percent between 18 to 24, 31.8 percent between 25 and 44, 21.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 9.3 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 43,638, and the median income for a family $ 50,384. Males have a median income of $ 36,031, women $ 25,537. The per capita income was $ 19,515. 8.4 percent of families and 10.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
